Develop funding plan to help Greyhound NDP leader Singh urges Trudeau

first_imgOTTAWA – Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is calling on the Liberal government to come up with a way to keep Greyhound buses on Canadian highways and servicing remote northern communities. In a letter to Justin Trudeau. Singh urges the prime minister to take “immediate action” and develop a funding plan that would prevent Greyhound from shutting down crucial routes in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, northwestern Ontario and rural British Columbia.“This federal funding plan must ensure there is no interruption or reduction in bus service, so no community is left stranded,” Singh writes in the letter released Wednesday. He also urges Trudeau to enlist the help of impacted provinces and municipalities in coming up with the plan.Greyhound Canada announced Monday that its cutting its passenger and delivery services in those regions, triggering outrage and apprehension among rural and First Nations communities that rely heavily on the company’s long-ubiquitous coaches and shipping services. The company is blaming a 41 per cent decline in ridership since 2010, persistent competition from subsidized national and inter-regional passenger transportation services, the growth of new low-cost airlines, regulatory constraints and the continued growth of car ownership.Singh said the cancellations — only the latest in Greyhound’s steady string of service reductions — would create a massive gap in transit services and make it all but impossible for many to access to jobs, health care, education, family and public services. He also urged Trudeau to listen to those worried about safety, citing the notorious stretch of B.C. highway known as the Highway of Tears, a region where many Indigenous women have gone missing.“If your government does not intervene to ensure service continues, you will be increasing these perilous conditions that put so many Indigenous women and girls in danger.”Rachel Rappaport, a spokeswoman for Indigenous Services Minister Jane Philpott, said the government recognizes the impact that Greyhound’s decision will have on First Nations communities, including those who require transportation for medical appointments.“We also recognize the serious concerns being raised regarding the safety and security of Indigenous women and girls. We will be reaching out to Indigenous partners to better understand the impacts on their communities, and we will continue to analyze the situation as we look to identify options to address these serious concerns.”Transport Canada said Greyhound Canada operates on a commercial basis with no support from the federal government, and that there are no existing federal programs that would subsidize a private intercity bus carrier.“As the economic regulation of interprovincial bus carriers in federal jurisdiction has been delegated to the provinces and territories, under the federal Motor Vehicle Transport Act, the federal government has not taken an active role in supporting service provision,” said spokesman Pierre Manoni.Manoni said Greyhound has announced service reductions in a number of markets since 2009 due to low ridership and financial losses and in many cases, service gaps are filled by other bus companies, and “other modes.”Citing Transport Canada’s statement, Singh said officials “played down” the government’s responsibility to act and called it “deeply concerning.”Conservative innovation critic Matt Jeneroux said Conservatives sympathize with Canadians and those communities that will be affected by the cancellations.“A Conservative government will examine ways to keep rural communities connected while protecting taxpayers’ hard-earned money,” he said.last_img read more

Danish Aalborg mad at Norwegian Federation because of Sagosens case

Sander Sagosen The World Young Handball Player 2014/2015 Sander Sagosen played final weekend at the Men’s EHF EURO 2016 with broken hand, what is now the reason for the “war” between his team Aalborg and Norwegian Handball Federation, writes Danes responded that they were not informed about the Sagosen hand’s fracture, so they appealed Norwegians to the European Handball Federation.– We have written to the European Handball Federation that we believe it is an obligation that countries or the European Handball Federation (EHF) must contact the clubs after something like that happens, says Aalborg director Jan Larsen to Danish TV2.– Anyone can make a mistake. But we have not heard anything from them. They believe that they have not made any mistakes, and that’s what irritates me most. It is very resentful and does not bode well for future cooperation with the Norwegian Handball Federation, says Larsen.Secretary General of the NHF Erik Langerud denies that they have not been in contact with Aalborg.– It is not true that they have not heard anything from us. Aalborg has received a letter from us about this, he said to TV 2.Langerud understand some of the Danish frustration.– We understand that they are irritated and that it boils a little now. But we also hope they see the issue from our standpoint. This was a difficult situation, in which the player himself did not want this to be communicated out. We could not override this, or ask your doctor to break his confidentiality, he said.– However, we have apologized to Aalborg that they did not get a chance to get a replacement within the transfer window. We fully understand that they are dissatisfied with it, says Langerud. Both sides agreed that EHF rules in this situation must be much more clearer than it’s now.– Alex is 20 years old. He is a fantastic handball player and would love for Norway. We will never stop him. I am annoyed with the Norwegians, but we can not keep Sander home because of it, says Aalborg’s Larsen.Langerud think in turn that relations between NHF and Aalborg will be fine.– We work well with most clubs around the world, and I think we’re going to do it with Aalborg in the future. ← Previous Story 300 DAYS WITHOUT HANDBALL: Mariusz Jurkiewicz is back! After being released from Ethiopia he landed up in conflict-torn South Sudan instead of Kenya.“Locals found him and called a Brit in Juba they recently worked for. He contacted the British embassy in Juba,” the rally’s organisers said on their Facebook page yesterday. With AFPRead: 8 glasses per passenger and fancy food at 35,000 feet – what it’s like to chef for an airlineRead: Cystic fibrosis patients ‘dismayed’ at decision to not fund life-changing drug 20,025 Views Share32 Tweet Email2 Given our detainment in Ethiopia and this, I can honestly say, we are ready to come home! Blizzard may be forced to issue Diablo III refunds in Korea

first_imgWhen Blizzard launched Diablo III a couple of weeks ago it suffered a backlash from gamers on two fronts. The first was the inability for the game’s servers to cope with demand, the second was the requirement to always be connected in order to play even the single-player experience. The server problems may have been fixed, but the always-connected DRM remains in place. One side effect of such a system beyond impacting actually playing the game is the fact you can’t return Diablo III. In Korea, the government has received so many complaints about this they are now investigating Blizzard and the outcome could be a very expensive one for the company. The reason for the complaints by Korean gamers is down to the lack of server availability at launch. Lots of people could not connect and so deemed the game to be faulty. They tried to return their copies, but were told by Blizzard that they weren’t entitled to a refund due to the contract they had agreed to when purchasing. What followed was hundreds of complaints to the Korean Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which in turn led to an investigation. Blizzard’s offices have already been raided in Seoul with documents being seized relating to a no refund policy. It is quite possible that Blizzard has broken consumer laws in the country and will face repercussions because of that.If the FTC find Blizzard sold the game under an “unfair contract,” then it could force the company to offer a full refund to all gamers who want one. With the game having been playable for weeks, it’s not unlikely many gamers would take advantage of that offer to get their money back having completed the game. This also puts a big question mark over the use of online DRM if it impacts the rights of the consumer to actually return a game. If by default you cannot return the game, it is going to break consumer laws in a number of countries, not just Korea.Read more at The Korea Times, via Edge Onlinelast_img read more

Anonymous Online Shopping Dont Come Easy—Or Cheap

first_imgLet us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. To paraphrase Hall & Oates: Tech companies, they’re watching you; they see your every move.Which makes it difficult to do just about anything on the Web without being tracked. But one hacker security expert has a few tips on how to avoid those prying eyes while shopping online.AdChoices广告Kevin Mitnick—best known for his high-profile mid-’90s arrest, trial, and five-year prison sentence for computer-related crimes—collaborated with CBS News to outline the steps necessary for evading digital pursuit.Your first move: Buy a prepaid gift card. The kind Visa and MasterCard sell, pre-loaded with funds. Instead of being linked to a bank account or providing a line of credit, the amount is limited by the value assigned to the card.If you’re really serious about this whole anonymity thing, go ahead and purchase a new computer. (One not associated with anyone’s Internet history.) Then pick up a hotspot to connect to the Web and a mobile phone to register for email accounts.“So we’re buying a burner phone to register for things online?” CBS’s Tony Dokoupil asked.“Right, and also have a call-back number because when you do online shopping, they always want to have a phone number,” Mitnick explained. The process really requires a clean slate—and a bit of pocket change. CBS reportedly invested some $400 on equipment, just to ensure companies had “no way to associate our real identities with what we were doing online.”“When you want more security, it’s more inconvenient,” Mitnick admitted.“People will go to the trouble of anonymizing themselves to protect their privacy,” he told CBS.But simply opening an “incognito” window in your browser is not enough.“When you normally go on your computer at your home or office, you’re assigned an IP address by your Internet service provider,” he continued. “And it’s quite easy to, you know, track that type of information.”The smallest mistake, like shipping items to your home address, could collapse the entire house of cards you so painstakingly (and expensively) built. Researchers create tiny pump that provides continuous and spontaneous antigravity water delivery

first_img For perhaps thousands of years people have wished for a way to move water from one location to another without the need for a power source, i.e. carrying or pumping it, especially when moving it uphill. In this new effort, the researchers have found a way to do that, albeit, with severe limitations. As the researchers note, scientists have seen many examples of water being moved up from a lower location in nature, capillary action, etc., but not in the way they were looking for. In this new effort the team looked to improve on such examples by taking advantage of both surface tension and a superhydrophobic material. To build their pump, the researchers created a superhydrophobic material by exposing a copper mesh to an alkali solution—the microscopic sized pockets it created caused water to slide with almost no friction. They then affixed the mesh to the bottom of a plastic tube that sat vertically. They next attached another tube to the first creating a right angle at the top and then attached a very short third tube to the second at its other end, this one pointing straight down. That was all it took. To use the pump, a bit of liquid was introduced into the pump, priming it, then a drop was introduced from beneath the pump, through the wire mesh. The liquid in the pump rose, because it was repelled from below, into the second tube and then into the third where it was expelled. © 2015 More information: Superhydrophobic “Pump”: Continuous and Spontaneous Antigravity Water Delivery, Advanced Functional Materials, DOI: 10.1002/adfm.201501320AbstractAntigravity transportation of water, which is often observed in nature, is becoming a vital demand for advanced devices and new technology. Many studies have been devoted to the motion of a single droplet on a horizontal or inclined substrate under specific assistance. However, the self-propelled water motion, especially continuous antigravity water delivery, still remains a considerable challenge. Here, a novel self-ascending phenomenon driven only by the surface energy release of water droplets is found, and a superhydrophobic mesh to pump water up to a height of centimeter scale is designed. An integrated antigravity transportation system is also demonstrated to continuously and spontaneously pump water droplets without additional driving forces. The present novel finding and integrated devices should serve as a source of inspiration for the design of advanced materials and for the development of new technology with exciting applications in microfluidics, microdetectors, and intelligent systems.via NewScientist Play Credit: Advanced Functional Materials, DOI: 10.1002/adfm.201501320 PausePlay% buffered00:0000:00UnmuteMuteDisable captionsEnable captionsSettingsCaptionsDisabledQuality0SpeedNormalCaptionsGo back to previous menuQualityGo back to previous menuSpeedGo back to previous menu0.5×0.75×Normal1.25×1.5×1.75×2×Exit fullscreenEnter fullscreen Shape shifting liquid metal able to propel itself through liquids (w/ video) Play Credit: Advanced Functional Materials, DOI: 10.1002/adfm.201501320 The team notes that such a device can only pump to a few centimeters in height before gravity wins over, preventing the drop from entering, much less pushing other liquid up..
