recognise their work Sonam said “Yes of course why not But I think we already have enough awards in Bollywood for recognition… but I hope there are more nominations in these various awards where women are concerned” Several Bollywood stars have raised concern over the credibility of various award shows while some categorically stay away from attending such events Sonam feels things will change for Hood Army Express Related News Nearly 15 kids sit in a line hands outstretched near Sai Dham Temple off Western Express Highway in Kandivali A volunteer dressed in a green t-shirt rubs a hand sanitizer on each little palm The kids rub their palms together and sniff them All smiles they get ready for a food box a routine now for their Sunday afternoon meals for the past few months By now the children are personally acquainted with the nearly 10 volunteers of the Borivali-Goregaon chapter of Robin Hood Army (RHA) a volunteer organisation working to get surplus food from restaurants to the less fortunate The RHA active in India and in Pakistan was founded by two 27-year-olds Neel Ghose and Anand Sinha who were inspired by an organisation in Portugal that passed on excess food to the needy They thought a similar model was much needed and could be replicated in India With a vision to ‘eliminate hunger and food wastage globally’ the duo initiated this programme in Delhi where they resided with a ‘6 Robins 1 City’ programme and started with serving meals to 150 homeless people across Delhi Through social media they spread the effort to other cities including Kolkata Bangalore and Mumbai last year In April this year they got volunteers in Pakistan as well Vishaka Acharya 23 the co-ordinator of the Mumbai chapter said RHA started the first Mumbai chapter in the Fort area in south Mumbai in October last year Vishaka who happens to be Neel’s colleague at a restaurant search and discovery service said that currently they have nine chapters across south Mumbai Andheri-Bandra and Goregaon-Borivali with nearly 100 volunteers a number that keeps changing At times there are people who join for a few Sundays and leave Acharya said that they are fine with people not continuing since it is a volunteer-based initiative “However getting dedicated volunteers who would be present every Sunday remains our biggest challenge There are still certain areas like Andheri West and beyond Borivali that are not covered due to lack of volunteers” Vishaka told The Indian Express Nikunj Nawalgaria 25 a Vasai-based entrepreneur along with Jatin Tank Sanjay Sonawdekar and Rahul Surve-all in their late twenties – are part of the floating group of 15 volunteers of the Goregaon-Borivali chapter While Nawalgaria learnt about it through Facebook the other three came to know about the initiative through colleagues or relatives who were part of RHA Since volunteers need to take up activities only on Sunday afternoons they can be part of RHA without having to compromise on their jobs or social commitments “The few hours we spend here would otherwise be whiled away at home It gives a very different kind of satisfaction to see the happiness on children’s faces” Nawalgaria told The Indian Express The group calls up the restaurants on Saturday to decide the number of food packets they are contributing and the time RHA volunteers should collect it This weekend RHA volunteers met outside Sanjay Gandhi National Park at around 2 pm and moved to the hotels from where 150 packets of eatables including Dal Khichdi and sweets were picked up and stored in two cars The first stop was to the smallest cluster: two slums near Magathane depot in Borivali where a group of 10 children who were selling wares at signals or playing are informed by their parents that ‘teachers’ have come “Our focus is only to provide food to children at present We also try to teach them things like hygiene by asking them to wash their hands and saying thank you after getting something from someone Sometimes parents of children ask us for particular things However we just limit ourselves to providing food” Nawalgaria explains Some of the children are shy to open the food packets in front of them but as the volunteers turn around they start eating The same activity is replicated at a cluster opposite Sai Dham Temple in Kandivali Kohinoor Industrial Estate at Goregaon and ends with the slum cluster below the flyover opposite Oberoi Mall in Goregaon at around 445 pm There are certain enthusiastic volunteers like Tank who then go on to join the Andheri chapter as well Sonu Godecha a woman in her twenties at the slum colony opposite Sai Dham temple says “More than the food which we get on most days the children just like the fact that these boys care for them As soon as they see their car they go running towards them shouting ‘teacher aa gaye’” Over time RHA has had a Navi Mumbai and Thane chapter as well Their plan is to go ‘decentralised and hyper local’ and have self sustained communities across the city “We wish to have more chapters that are smaller in areas such that people in Andheri chapter would have to deliver food in Andheri and not till Bandra That will ensure better network and more participation” Visakha explains That again will depend on the number of volunteers who are willing to forego a few hours on their Sunday afternoons For all the latest
